Beetles
딱정벌레는 곤충 종 중에서도 가장 많은 수를 차지하는 만큼 우리 생태계에 이로운 존재입니다. 친환경 농산물 재배 시에는 해충 방제를 위해 무당벌레를 활용하고, 사슴벌레나 장수풍뎅이과 딱정벌레는 화려한 외양 덕분에 반려곤충으로 인기를 누립니다. 또한 영양물질이 풍부한 식용 딱정벌레의 수는 무려 500여종에 달해 미래의 식량 안보문제를 해결할 수 있는 기대자원으로 주목받고 있습니다.
시간이 흐를수록 지구상에서 오래도록 그 가치가 빛날 것이 틀림없는 딱정벌레는 현재 기후변화 등 지구환경의 근간을 흔드는 여러 요인들로 인해 존속에 위협을 받고 있습니다. 더구나 FAO(유엔 식량농업기구)가 보고서를 통해 소비자들의 곤충에 대한 혐오감이 이들을 받아들이는 데에 최대 걸림돌로 작용하고 있다는 점을 지적하기도 하는 안타까운 현실입니다.
윤영모 작가는 그의 작품을 통해 딱정벌레가 공유성을 가짐으로써 그 소중함이 널리 알려지길 바랍니다. 작가는 “딱정벌레는 보석이다.”라는 슬로건을 가지고 그들의 형태를 보석 세공사의 눈으로 재해석하였습니다. 보석 커팅 디자인의 한 종류인 Style D◆Cut을 통해 자연에서 온 입체적 형태를 수십 개의 면으로 나누고, 각각의 면에 있는 그대로의 색상을 담아 실물보다 더 아름다운 40마리의 딱정벌레를 탄생시켰습니다.
그래픽 아티스트의 손에서 태어난아름다운 <Beetles>는 딱정벌레에 대한 시각적 거부감이 해소되고, 그들이 우리에게 친숙하고 유익한 존재임을 상기하는 전시가 될 것입니다.

Introduction
Beetles benefit our ecosystem, as numerous species fall under the order. Ladybugs are used in eco-friendly agriculture as it is the natural enemy of many harmful insects. Stag beetles or ground beetles are popular companion insects for their flashy looks. More than 500 species of beetles are nutritious enough to be edible insects and are highlighted as the future of food security.
Beetles will be valuable for the earth for years to come; however, their existence is endangered for many reasons that turn the world upside down, like climate change. It is such a shame that consumers negatively perceive insects merely because of their disgusted looks, as the food and Agriculture Organization of the UN(FAO) once pointed out.
Yoon Young Mo worked on re-creating these beetles hoping to spread their preciousness to people. “Beetles are jewels” is his slogan as he rendered the looks of beetles from the eyes of the jewelry craftsman. With Style D◆Cut, a type of jewelry cut,he dissected the three dimensions of nature into dozens of sides and colored each side to reflect the shade of nature, creating marvelous beetles of 40.
The disgusted looks of the beetles are now reborn as marvelous <Beetles> by the hands of the graphic artist. The exhibition will be a wake-up call, reminding us how beneficial and friendly the creatures are to us.
